Shaping Community

The Choices We Make

CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

For several years Ely Chapter of Lambda Alpha International, an honorary land economics society, has conducted Community Assistance Panels where twenty or more professionals spend two days focused on a specific Chicago neighborhood problem. Last year we expanded our focus to consider a broader set of issues and arranged for a larger one-day conference that we called New Urbanism and the City. It was a smashing success, so this year we are pleased to present our 2nd annual conference which we are calling Shaping Community: The Choices We Make.

The symposium will be co-hosted, and funding has been provided by DePaul University's Department of Finance and the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, and REIA (Real Estate Investment Association, an organization of real estate professionals in the Chicago region).

Communities and neighborhoods across our nation are increasingly crafting tools to shape and define their character. Guidelines, review boards, advocacy groups, overlay districts and ordinances are appearing in profusion as each community seeks to conserve its past and define its future. This symposium will examine the forces at work in both the public and private realms as we explore the choices we can make, and the goals we set in making the places in which we live, work and play.

  • What do communities and neighborhoods say they would like to be? And what do they mean?
  • Can (and should) communities regulate their appearance and character? Or only the land use?
  • Will more regulation protect communities or will it only delay market forces?
  • How do developers, architects, planners and others respond to citizen activism?
  • How can we assess the impact of our individual choices about housing and design?

If your schedule does not permit you to join us for the full day, please do so for the luncheon. The fee for the full day symposium is $100. Attendance at the luncheon only will cost $50. Our luncheon keynote speaker will be Sarah Susanka, Susanka Studios, an architect and author of The Not So Big House columnist for Fine Homebuilding.  Pre-lunch libations will be available at 11:45am and we will conclude the speech promptly at 1:30pm so that guests who must return to their offices for the afternoon may do so.

Attendance at the full day event is limited to 175, but we can accommodate an additional 75 at lunch. If you plan to attend this very special event, you should make your reservation promptly.
